Pete Alasky Jr., 92, of Farmington, died Thursday, Aug. 20, 2020, at his residence. He was born March 31, 1928, in Farmington, a son of the late Pete and Julia Capet Alasky Sr.
Following his graduation from high school, he served in the United States Navy, from 1946 to 1948 as a Seaman Second Class. Pete was an entrepreneur who believed in investing in his hometown as well as investing in people and took great pleasure in the success of both. Following a brief stint in the coal mines, Pete and his brother, Harry, opened a gas station in Bellview. In 1954, Pete and Violet opened an Esso Gas station in Farmington, then a Western Auto Catalog Order Center within the station. By 1966, Pete and Violet opened a Western Auto franchise, which is now the well-known Alasky’s in Farmington. Through the various expansions and additions of goods and products, Pete proved to be an astute businessman who was also a great teacher, a “doctor of business and finance,” attributing his success to the blessing of God.
Pete was a faithful member of the St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Farmington, was an avid golfer and bowler and was the last surviving member of the Gobbler’s Knob Softball Team. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Elks and Moose Lodges in Mannington.
Survivors include his wife of nearly 72 years, Violet Sherry Alasky, whom he married Oct. 31, 1948; three children, Diane (Donnie) Aloi, Peter J. (Susan) Alasky III and Beth Ann Alasky, all of Farmington; four grandchildren, Nick (Teresa) Aloi, Julius (Amber) Aloi, Peter J. (Shavon) Alasky IV and Angela (Rich Ice) Alasky; nine great-grandchildren, Logan, Franchesca, Andrew, Jared, Julian Aloi, Sophia and Luke Burnside, Peter J. Alasky V and Allie Alasky; and several nieces, nephews and extended family.
Pete loved the employees of Alasky’s, both past and present, and considered them as family, appreciating all their devotion and care for their work and the family.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his sister and brother-in-law, Louise and Julius Shappek; brothers- and sisters-in-law, Robert and Joann Alasky, Harry and Louise Alasky and an infant Phillip Alasky.
Violet and family would like to thank the doctors and nurses at UHC, the home health workers, and a special note of thanks and appreciation to Drs. John Manchin and John Lobban and their staff for their care and support during Pete’s illness.
As much as the family would love to receive friends for a public service to honor Pete, due to the circumstances surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic and in consideration of the health and well-being of Pete’s beloved wife, Violet, private visitation will be held for the family by the Hutson Funeral Home in Farmington. A private Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the St. Peter’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Father Vincy Illickal as celebrant. Interment will be in the IOOF Cemetery at Farmington.
