Mabel Stiles

Mabel Victoria Stiles, 98, of Kingwood, went home to a family reunion on Wednesday, July 29, 2020.

She was born Jan. 26, 1922, in Cumberland, Md., a daughter of the late Porter M. and Helen Tasker Wilt.

Mabel walked a mile to attend the one room school at Spring Glade Grade School, Deer Park, Md. then graduated from Oakland High School, Class of 1939 and from Catherman’s Business School. Her working career began as a bookkeeper for the Maryland Welfare Department, she walked or rode her bicycle six miles to the Oakland, Md. office and back home.

Mrs. Stiles has also worked for the WVU Extension Office, Empire Lumber Company, Fort Benning, GA Military Hospital, was a legal secretary for Charles Wehner and Melvin C. Snyder Sr. and for Mountain State Surveying, her husband’s company. One of her many loves was being a seamstress, where she made and displayed many of her crafts at fairs and festivals from 1973 to the present and she loved her flower gardens. She was a member and treasurer of the Manown Church from 1953 to present day.

She is survived by four sons, Raymond Thomas Stiles and wife Jane, of Kingwood, Floyd Porter Stiles and wife, Debbie, of Fairmont, Joseph Stiles and Curtis Todd Stiles and wife Roxanna, all of Kingwood; five grandchildren, Melissa Clemens, Chad Stiles, Jonathan Stiles, Tori Stiles and Sarah Cremeans and nine great-grandchildren, Olivia, Mya, Maggie, Lila, Logan, Jenni, Marleigh, Sutton and Magnolia.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Floyd Ray Stiles, in 1987; five brothers, Charles, Harvey, Lawrence, Elwood and Lloyd; and her sister, Mary Humberson.

Friends may call at the Browning Funeral Home in Kingwood from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 2 where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 3 with Pastor Michael Carter officiating. Interment will follow the services at 1 p.m. in the Garrett County Memorial Gardens in Oakland, Md.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made, in memory of Mrs. Stiles, to the Manown Church, c/o Pastor Michael Carter, 1412 Brockton Drive, Morgantown, WV 26508.

At Mabel’s request, masks and social distancing should be observed.
