Tree falls on car, damages power lines during Tuesday storm

A tree fell onto a parked vehicle and knocked power lines down during Tuesday evening’s storms.

Two people were in the vehicle, which was parked on Lawnwood Street, when the tree landed on it at 5:44 p.m., but they were able to get out and were unharmed, Morgantown Communications Director Andrew Stacy said.

Morgantown Police and Fire responded to the incident and it’s still being investigated, Stacy said.

“We will respond appropriately to any claims of property damage,” he said.

Public Works crews cleared the tree and Mon Power responded to deal with the downed electric lines.

Mon Power Spokesperson Mark Durbin said about 200 customers in the Morgantown area lost power late Tuesday afternoon because of the weather.

The power was restored “fairly quickly,” he said.

The thunderstorms were accompanied by 60-65 mph gusts of winds, according to AccuWeather meteorologist Isaac Longley. The area also saw just under an inch of recorded rainfall.

More storms are expected Wednesday and Thursday nights with a chance of storms Wednesday afternoon as well, Longley said.

Thursday will be a bit cooler than recent days with high of 81 degrees and an overnight low of 57, according to Longley.

The large decayed tree that fell on top of a car during Tuesday evening rain and wind storm is located on the property of the Old First Ward School.
