COLUMBUS — After making it to the quarterfinals, No. 23 Herd That fell to No. 2 Overseas Elite, 93-76.
Herd That is most comprised of alumni from Marshall University, while OE is a mixed bag of players from across the country including NBA great “Iso Joe” Johnson.
The rules were simple: First team to 93 points. From the early-afternoon tip off, OE was clearly going to move on to the semifinals.
Outscoring Herd That 27-17 in the first quarter, OE then ended the half with 20 more points. Herd That would outscore OE in the second quarter by four points, but that would be the only time, as OE put up 56 points to HT’s 35 in the second half. OE’s biggest lead of the game was 23 points.
Jon Elmore led Marshall’s squad with 23 points on 42% shooting from the field (8-of-19). Elmore led the team in assists with four. Chris Cokley, an alumnus of UAB, was the second-highest scorer for the team, hitting 53% of his shots for 17 points. Cokley led the team in steals with three. Both Cokley and Elmore had four rebounds.
Overseas Elite was led by the seven-time NBA All-Star small forward Johnson with 35 points. The 39-year-old hit 65% of his shots from the floor (15-of-23) and led the team in 3-pointers, hitting 5-of-6. He also led in assists (5) and tied Dakarai Tucker for most rebounds (7). Frank Session helped Johnson out with 19 points while grabbing five boards and four assists.
Both teams made use of turnovers, each scoring 19 off of them. Herd That had an advantage in fast-break scoring, converting them into 15 points to OE’s three points. OE had the advantage in boards, grabbing 42 to HT’s 30.
Overseas Elite will next play the winner of No. 3 Boeheim’s Army and No. 22 Sideline Cancer. The game will be streamed live today on ESPN.
