Morgantown woman charged with 4 counts of child neglect

MORGANTOWN – A Morgantown woman is charged with four counts of child neglect after she was found unresponsive in the apartment she shared with her four children.

Child Protective Services was contacted about the children, aged 1 month, 1 year, 9 years and 10 years, according to a criminal complaint. The children told a police officer they didn’t have any relatives in the area.

According to a criminal complaint by State Police Cpl. M.J. Wilson, Mon EMS administered Narcan to Maria Elizabeth Williams, 25. She is charged with four counts of child neglect creating a substantial risk of injury, a felony. She was arraigned Wednesday.

The officer said MECCA 911 received a call of a possible overdose at 11:40 p.m. Sunday at Williams’ address. He was met at the door by the 10-year-old, who took him upstairs.

Williams was lying on the floor against the wall, curled into an almost fetal position, with her arm outstretched. The 9-year-old and 1-year-old were holding her hand. The trooper asked the children to go into another room.

Williams was “purple in color and unresponsive” to any of the officer’s attempts to get a response. Mon EMS arrived and administered Narcan to Williams, who began to talk with them.

Going into the room where the children were, the officer also found a 1-month-old child asleep in a child seat. The oldest child told him, “his mother had been drinking during the day and that she smokes weed.” There were no other adults in the residence, the child said.

According to the complaint, when the officer asked if there were drugs in the home, the child took him to a bathroom where there was over the counter medicine. There was also foil with a burnt white powder, a straw and a lighter, which the child did not recall seeing before then.
