The City of Morgantown is reminding businesses that the city’s 1% sales and use tax will go into effect Wednesday. Approved by Morgantown City Council in May 2019, the municipal sales and use tax should be collected by businesses that operate in city limits.
Businesses operating in the city will pay the 1% sales and use tax to the West Virginia Tax Department at the same time and in the same manner as the state sales tax. The sales and use tax comes with a reduction in Business & Occupation taxes for retail, by .05%, and service, by .1%.
The city anticipates about $5 million in revenue each year from the sales and use tax. The funds gathered from the municipal sales and use tax will be used for police and fire pensions, other post-employment benefits, capital infrastructure projects, and capital improvements to BOPARC facilities and parks.
Businesses are encouraged to contact the West Virginia Tax Department at 304-558-3333 or 800-982-8297 for more information or questions about the Municipal Sales and Use Tax.
