Reedsville brings new attractions
REEDSVILLE — Reedsville is sprucing up its park.
Councilwoman Britney Titus said the park has always been a staple in town.
She said not only is council adding new attractions to the park, it is also making it safer.
Titus said town officer Paul Rowan regularly patrols the park and makes sure it is safe. She said council wants the park to be a place where people can come and enjoy themselves.
“I don’t know anyone who in town who doesn’t remember playing here and climbing on the big rocks,” she said.
Titus said one of the rocks has two indentations in the rock. “The kids call them the king and queen chairs,” she said.
Council added a handicap-accessible toy to the park but it was broken. It was recently replaced.
Titus said a safety swing was added to the swing set. It too can be used by those who are handicapped.
Two recent additions are a spider swing and a tetherball. Titus said the spider swing has been a really big draw for the park.
A new restroom was added last year. Titus said it’s available to the public during daylight hours but is locked at night.
Last year, town workers moved the slide and swing set from the upper park to the lower one, leaving the upper park toy free. Titus said the next project will be expansion of the basketball court.
Council has talked about putting it out on bid, Titus said. “But that’s expensive, so we are going to do it ourselves. We are going to expand it to a regulation half court with two rims so more kids can play at once.”
Another addition she would like to see added in the future is a swing made for children in wheelchairs. Titus said council is also considering adding a sandbox excavator.
The suggestion for this toy came from town employee Tom Johnson.
“My wife suggested it,” Johnson said. “We were at a park that had one big enough for me to sit on. I was playing with it and a kid came up and stood, watched for a while and then left.”
Johnson said he was in trouble. His wife told him the child was standing there because she wanted to play.
Johnson said his wife found one of the toys at Lowe’s and bought it for their grandchildren. It isn’t big enough for him to sit on though.
Titus said she would like to see some new, fun things added to the upper park near the basket ball court.
“I thought a gaga box might make a good addition,” she said.
Town workers are currently completing the addition of lights to the two large pavilions in the lower park.
Signs have also been added on Long Alley and West Street showing people using the rail trails the location of the restroom and picnic areas. Titus said the town also added two new benches, one in the upper and one in the lower park.
“There is nothing more relaxing than sitting on a bench or the big rocks and watching the sun set through the trees,” Titus said.
