REEDSVILLE —
A motion to hold employee evaluations on the anniversary of their hiring passed unanimously in Reedsville Council.
The vote led to a discussion about changes in benefits and incentives.
“I would like to see better sick days and more vacation time,” Paul Rowan, Reedsville town officer, said. “Three sick days doesn’t do it for a year.”
Councilman Greg Burke suggested an incentive.
“What about a half a day a quarter?” he asked. “In a year’s time that would add two days.”
A question arose about giving an employee more time off for doing a good job.
Town attorney Mark E. Gaydos said if an incentive is in the employee handbook it can’t be given to just one employee who does a good job.
“It has to be given to everyone,” he said. “Unless there is a provision that it could be added under certain circumstances.”
Gaydos also said the town could have a “use it or lose it” days off provision. “You could allow days to accumulate for three years or get paid for in full or in part at the end of the year.”
Mayor Jason Titus said under the current handbook days cannot be accumulated.
“If you would put in more incentives you would keep your people,” Rowan said. “We work well together. We’re a good team. I don’t want to see anyone leave.”
Gaydos said the only contradictor would be if someone is employed for a short time and has a week paid vacation and three sick days. He said under those circumstances the town would have to pay the employee for the accumulated sick leave and vacation.
“The better you treat the employees the better they will work for you,” Councilwoman Britney Titus said.
Gaydos asked if employees could donate vacation and sick leave to an other employee who has an emergency situation.
“I believe the employees should have a say in these decisions,” Burke said.
Gaydos told council to decide what changes it would like regarding employee benefits and incentives and send the information to him.
