Former Delegate Mike Manypenny will get a rematch against Delegate Amy Summers in House 49th race

MORGANTOWN — Delegate Amy Summers, R-Taylor, will face former Democrat Delegate Mike Manypenny in November for the 49th District House of Delegates seat.

In the 5th District, longtime Delegate Dave Pethtel, D-Wetzel will once again face Republican Phillip Wiley.

Manypenny, of Grafton, defeated Democrat Brandon Antion, also of Grafton, 1,477 votes (71,39%) to 592 votes (28.61%) in the Tuesday Democratic primary. Summers, of Flemington, was unopposed. Totals are unofficial pending canvassing.

The district includes one Monongalia County precinct, and one Marion County precinct. In Mon, Manypenny received 177 votes, Antion 73. In Marion, Manypenny tallied 117 votes to Antion’s 31.

Summers was first elected in 2014, defeating incumbent Manypenny 54.18% to 45.82%. House speaker Roger Hanshaw named her majority leader in 2018; the 2019 legislative session was her first in that role.

Manypenny served three terms, first elected in 2008. In 2104, he co-chaired the Legislative Oversight Commission on State Water Resources, which investigated the Freedom Industries chemical spill and help craft the resulting above-ground tank legislation, SB 373.

Manypenny said, “I’m excited to go up against my opponent in November. I’m ready to go back to Charleston and get back to work. More than anything, I just want to thank the voters in Taylor, Marion and Monongalia counties for their ongoing confidence and support over the years.”

Antion said, “The goal for me has always been to make sure we had candidate who would help to fully fund our schools, make sure health carc was affordable and first class, to help our small businesses. I think Mike can do that. I think he is a fantastic human being. I wish him the best and I will stand behind him in the general.

In the 5th, Pethtel, of Burton, defeated Wiley, of New Martinsville in two general elections: in 2016, 62.96% to 37.04%; and in 2018, 58.73% to 41.27%.

Pethtel served in the House for six sessions from 1989 to 1994, then from 1999 to the present.
