KINGWOOD —
The Preston County Animal Shelter is open to the public but with some changes due to COVID-19.
Shelter secretary Samantha Hostutler said individuals interested in visiting the shelter to see adoptable pets can now do so.
All visitors over age 2 will be screened before entering the facility and must wear face masks while on shelter property.
Hostutler said, due to social distancing, only a few people will be allowed in the main building at a time.
She said the shelter’s Facebook page has videos and photos of some of the shelter’s adoptable pets.
Hostutler said due to veterinarian availability, animals not already spayed/neutered may have an extended wait time until they can be released to their new owners.
Dog Warden Kelly Reel said the shelter is still accepting donations of dog and cat food, toys, blankets, towels and other pet and cleaning items. Donations can be left outside the door.
She said adoption applications can be found on the Preston County Commission website, prestoncountywv.gov, under the forms tab.
Reel said the shelter is currently not accepting owner-relinquished animals. She said if an owner wants to relinquish a pet, he or she can call and get on the owner relinquish list.
Reel said adoption times and days are: 10 a.m.-2:30p.m. Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. The shelter will close from noon to 12:30 p.m. on these days to allow staff to have a lunch break.
