Terra Alta — A $185,050 U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) grant will allow Terra Alta to hire two full- time police officers.
The grant is through the DOJ Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) Hiring Program.
Mayor Bobby DeLauder said Terra Alta currently has no police officers.
“We were able to remain a priority for the DOJ because we have no officers at this time,” he said.
DeLauder, a retired law enforcement officer and former Terra Alta police officer, said one of his priorities will be to have school zone coverage by this fall.
“I have no doubt that each recipient will put this funding to good use, enhancing the good work already being done in the name of safety for our communities. The Department of Justice is committed to protecting residents and ensuring neighborhoods are crime-free as possible,” U.S. Attorney Bill Powell, Northern District of West Virginia, wrote in a news release.
The COPS Hiring Program is a competitive award program intended to reduce crime and advance public safety through community policing by providing direct funding for the hiring of career law enforcement officers. In addition to providing financial support for hiring, it provides funding to state, local and tribal law enforcement to enhance local community policing strategies and tactics.
