Star City mayor warns of email, text scam

A scammer posing as Star City Mayor Herman Reid is attempting to scam people through email and text.

Anyone who receives a text or email claming to be from Reid should report it to their local law enforcment agency, Reid said.

He has already notified the Monongalia County Sheriff’s Department of the scam, he said.

People should never give money out over the phone or email and should be extra careful anytime that request for money is in the form of green dot cards or pre-paid cards, Sheriff Perry Palmer said.

When in doubt about the legitimacy of a request, be it from a person or company, take the time to reach out to an official number found on a website, phone book or bill, he said.

If you suspect a scam you should report it to your local law enforcement agency.
