Birdie L. VanDevander, 78, of Morgantown, passed away at J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital due to complications with aneurysm surgery on Tuesday, May 12.
Birdie is preceded in death by her adopted parents, Mike and Thelma Loya; her husband, Douglas VanDevander Sr.; brother, Robert Newbraugh; and sisters, Maxine, Velma and Zelma.
Birdie is survived by her loving son Douglas, his wife Stephanie and their children Austin, Tyler and Hannah; her loving daughter, Sharon and her children Ryan and Joshua Elliff; and her sister, Mary Riffle and her husband Edwin Riffle. She is also survived by other nieces and nephews.
Birdie was born on Dec. 12, 1941, in Morgantown. She attended George W. Phillips Elementary School, Riverside Jr. High and graduated from University High School in 1961. Doug and Birdie were married in Morgantown on June 26, 1965. Birdie was a compassionate spirit whose passion was caring for others. Everyone who met her instantly became her friend. She cared so deeply about others, often thinking of them before herself. She loved to talk to everyone about her family as she was very proud of them. Birdie’s kind heart, cheerful attitude and loving spirit has endeared her to all her friends and families’ hearts. Her favorite hobbies were knitting, sewing and making blankets for friends and family. Birdie is loved by friends and family and she would always go out of her way to help anyone. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother, and she will be dearly missed.
