The Tucker County Landfill is sponsoring a municipal clean-up this year for the Town of Terra Alta and other Preston County municipalities they serve.
According to a letter received by Terra Alta Mayor Robert DeLauder, the sponsorship includes free disposal of up to 10 tons of residential waste.
Although the clean-up doesn’t include tires, Litter Officer Jay Sowers said tires can be dropped off at the Terra Alta Recycle Center.
Chemicals, batteries, commercial waste or free flowing liquids like oil, paint, gas or fuel oil will not be accepted. Paint cans can be included but must be empty.
White goods and appliances will also be accepted but must have the freon removed and be brought to the landfill separate from the other waste.
Sowers said the State Department of Environmental Protection is covering the cost of transporting old tires collected from around the county to a central location.
“Tire recycling is going crazy,” Sowers said. “I’m getting caught up. I have a trailer loaded and the DEP will be picking it up and a couple of days.”
Tires are loaded onto a trailer at the Terra Alta recycling center. When it is full, the DEP has it hauled away and brings in an empty trailer.
Sowers said this is the second trailer load of tires to be picked up since February. Sowers said there is an average of 1,000 tires per trailer load.
He said anyone who has questions about tire disposal can call him at 304-698-5594.
Sowers said tires are not the only thing being cleaned up in Preston County. He said clean up is also being done along some county roads.
Sowers said he was thankful for the people who volunteered to help with a clean-up held on Earth Day.
“They (volunteers) cleaned up everything including deer carcases,” Sowers said. “I went to Coopers Rock, and there was only one bag left for me. The state road workers had picked up the rest.”
He said last weekend’s clean-up was set for 8:30 a.m.-noon on Dogtown Road.
Don Smith, who represents the County Commission on the Preston County Solid Waste Authority, said bids have been sent out for this years e-recycling event.
He said the event is scheduled for 8:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Aug. 22 at the Craig Civic Center.
