A Masontown man is charged with attempted murder after he allegedly shot a 45-year-old man in the face in a parking lot and chased the victim in his vehicle while firing and before crashing.
William Shifflett, 73, is also charged with wanton endangerment and malicious assault by the Monongalia County Sheriff’s Department.
The victim, whose name is not being released to protect his son who was with him, was transported to J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital and treated, Sheriff Perry Palmer said.
Deputies responded to the shooting, which happened in the parking lot of Greer Limestone on Earl L. Core Road, about 11 a.m. on Sunday.
The victim said he was parked with his juvenile son waiting for someone and when he got out of his vehicle Shifflett pulled up beside him and shot him in the face with a pistol, according to Palmer.
The victim got back in his car and fled, Palmer said. Shifflett chased him at a “high rate of speed” and fired at least one more round that hit the victim’s vehicle before crashing. The victim stopped in a parking lot and waited for police.
While deputies were on scene Shifflett pulled into the parking lot and was arrested, Palmer said.
The victim’s son was not injured, Palmer said.
The Sheriff’s Department is investigating and anyone with information is asked to call 304-291-7218.
