MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Six members of the West Virginia men’s golf team were named to the 2020 Academic All-Big 12 Men’s Golf Team, as announced by the conference Monday.
Senior Philipp Matlari and sophomore Kurits Grant were named to the first team and were two of five men’s golfers across the conference to earn the honor with 4.0 grade-point averages. Senior Etienne Papineau and juniors Logan Perkins and Mark Goetz joined Matlari and Grant on the first team, while junior Matthew Shapstene was named to the Academic All-Big 12 second team.
“I am very proud of the effort that the guys put forth in the classroom this year,” WVU coach Sean Covich said. “One of our priorities as a program is to achieve success in the classroom, and these guys certainly accomplished that goal. A lot of credit goes to our academic advisor, Stephanie White. She makes sure our guys are doing what they need to do on a daily basis to be successful in their academic studies.”
Matlari is a management major and earns his second Big 12 honor, while Grant, a finance major, earns the first honor of his career. Papineau is a sport and exercise psychology major and Goetz is a finance major, as they each earn the third Big 12 academic accolades of their careers. A management major, Perkins earns first team honors for the first time.
Sharpstene is majoring in multidisciplinary studies, earning his second consecutive Academic All-Big 12 second team honor.
The 2020 Academic All-Big 12 Men’s Golf Team is comprised of 45 honorees, including 35 on the first team and 10 on the second team. West Virginia, along with Baylor and Iowa State, paced all teams in the conference with six selections apiece.
First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, while the second team selections hold a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA. To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence.
