KINGWOOD — Preston High FFA students raised $19,000 through the online Ham & Bacon Show.
That’s lower than past years’ receipts, but fewer items were placed up for bid and the online auction was new, Preston High agriculture teacher Samantha Funk said.
Usually FFA members sell two hams and two bacon slabs each, and some also sell eggs. This year, group size restrictions because of COVID-19 eliminated the possibility of a physical auction. So the program opted to allow each FFA member to sell up to one bacon and one ham each in an online
auction.
A total of 35 hams and 33 bacons were sold.
“Given the circumstances, that was pretty much our only option,” Funk said. “It was that or not let the kids sell.”
That wasn’t something they wanted, after students worked all year raising, curing and cutting the hams and bacons.
Due to the nature of the auction, the hams and bacons were not judged.
Students are working on slicing the meat according to buyers’ wishes and contacting the buyers, who will pay when picking it up.
