The United Way of Monongalia and Preston Counties, in cooperation with the office of Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., announced support for MASKS 4 WV initiative — a statewide call to sew.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there is a shortage of personal protective equipment. Volunteers who can sew are being asked to make masks. If you are not able to sew, donations of clean and new 100% cotton fabric and elastic that can be used for ear loops will be accepted.
“We’re happy to partner with Sen. Manchin’s office. This is a great way to get involved and help our diligent health care workers while still practicing social distancing,” said local United Way Chief Executive Officer Brandi Helms. “This statewide effort will help protect those who are assisting the most vulnerable in our community. If you’re able to do this, we’re putting out the call. We need your help.”
Starting Wednesday, the United Way of Monongalia and Preston Counties is joining other United Way agencies statewide to collect crafted masks and donated supplies in designated bins. The bins will be at three locations in Morgantown: Kroger, 1851 Earl L. Core Road; and Clear Mountain Bank locations inside the Kroger at 350 Patteson Drive and the Kroger at 500 Suncrest Towne Center Drive. (The bank locations are temporarily closed.) Masks will be donated to medical facilities in Monongalia and Preston counties.
Watch an instructional video on how to make masks at youtu.be/VNvRl5AXt8I. Note that the pattern requires 100% cotton material. If elastic is unavailable for ear loops, it is acceptable for ties to be made from
the fabric. For questions, email

For those who would like to make a monetary donation to MASKS 4 WV, the local United Way established a Response and Recovery Fund in response to the pandemic. Just text the word COVID19MPC to 41444 to be redirected to our secure payment page.
