MORGANTOWN, W. Va. — As the number of coronavirus cases begin to climb throughout the state, an official at West Virginia University confirmed Tuesday no WVU athletes have been tested for the virus.
As of Tuesday, the state’s department of health and human resources reported there are 20 confirmed positive cases of the COVID-19 virus throughout West Virginia and six in Monongalia County.
West Virginia shut down in-person classes earlier this month and plans to begin online courses on March 30, once the school’s spring break has completed.
WVU students and its athletes are not required to return to Morgantown to take online courses.
On March 12, the Big 12 Conference and WVU announced that the remainder of its spring sports’ seasons would be canceled.
At the time, the WVU men’s and women’s basketball teams were in Kansas City, Mo. preparing to play in the Big 12 tournament and the school’s rifle team was in Lexington, Ky. set to compete in the national championships.
All other WVU athletic teams were still in Morgantown.
In a text message from WVU spokesperson Michael Fragale, he said all WVU athletic trainers and medical personnel are familiar with testing procedures, if needed.
Fragale also confirmed many of WVU’s athletes are not expected to return to Morgantown after spring break and will take online courses at their homes.
According to WVU statistics, the school has 597 athletes under its care.
