Robert W. McLain Jr., 89, passed away Friday evening, March 6, 2020, in Rivesville at the home of his caregivers, Jim and Mary Ann Harmon, where he has been lovingly cared for over the past 10 years. Bob was born in Morgantown on June 11, 1930, the only child of the late Robert W. McLain Sr. and Belva Bush McLain.
Bob was a graduate of Morgantown High School and a graduate of West Virginia University’s School of Journalism. He went on to spend 10 years in the United States Navy and was an officer. He later moved to New York City and worked at Pratt Institute for more than 25 years as an associate dean. After his retirement, he returned to Morgantown to care for his father.
Bob lived in his family home in Morgantown’s South Park neighborhood until 2010, when failing health required that he be cared for. For the past several years, he has been helped and cared for by the Harmon and Evanoff families.
Aside from his caregivers, Mr. McLain has no known survivors.
Following his wishes, cremation services are being provided by Smith Funeral & Cremation Care of Westover/Morgantown.
There will be a committal service at East Oak Grove Cemetery at 2 p.m. Monday, March 16, officiated by Pastor Isaac Harmon, where full military honors will be accorded. Inurnment will take place next to his mother Belva, who he spoke of often with much love.
Those wishing to attend the committal service are asked to gather at the cemetery no later than 1:50 p.m.
