Reedsville man sentenced

KINGWOOD — A Reedsville man was sentenced to three to 15 years in prison Friday.
Circuit Judge Steven Shaffer then commuted the sentence to home confinement and gave John David Dietz III credit for time served.

At an earlier plea hearing, Dietz, 30, pleaded guilty to DUI with death in the 2018 accident that killed his wife, Brieanne Dietz.

Dietz was driving a UTV on Red Rock Road when the 2018 accident occurred.

A UTV is similar to an all-terrain vehicle but with more seats. It is sometimes called a side-by-side.

According to police reports, Dietz failed all the standard field sobriety tests and had a BAC of 0.128%. The legal limit is .08.

Maria Lynn Hamm, mother of Brieanne Dietz, testified at the sentencing.

“I spoke with the prosecutors during this,” she said. “I recommended the court consider home confinement so he can provide for his family, my grandchildren.

“I know he is very remorseful. He would never intentionally hurt my daughter.”

Shaffer also ordered Dietz to pay a $1,000 fine, court costs and ordered him to seek counseling and grief therapy and to continue alcohol abuse therapy.
