MORGANTOWN — It was everything Seuss at Make it Awesome in Westover on Monday as 14 youngsters, their parents and teacher celebrated the birthday of Dr. Seuss with books, crafts and snacks.
Teacher Whitney Atkins said she likes to incorporate STEM activities into all the lessons taught at Make it Awesome, to give the children different ways to learn.
Monday’s preschool session started with Atkins reading Dr. Seuss’ “Hand, Hand, Fingers, Thumb.” That was followed by a discussion of the Dr. Seuss book, “Bartholomew and the Oobleck.” The oobleck is a sticky, green substance, so after the discussion, the kids got to make ooblecks.
Next, the kids used paper plates to make their own Cat in the Hat hats.
After that, the class worked with watercolors to paint Seuss characters, Thing 1 and Thing 2. Each took a straw and blew air onto the paint to make the Things’ blue hair stand out like it does in the book.
There was playtime and snacks. Everyone got to try green eggs and ham, plus have Gold Fish to represent the book, “One fish two fish red fish, blue fish.”
During snacks, Atkins read another Dr. Seuss book, “Fox in Socks.”
The Dr. Seuss class will be repeated at 10 a.m. Saturday.
The next new class will be at 10 a.m. Monday. It will be all about rainbows, with the little learners building, painting and eating rainbows. There will also be a science experiment with the class making a rainbow.
