Monongalia, Preston and Marion counties called off school Thursday due to winter weather, and motorists saw a tricky morning commute.
Four wrecks required EMS, a MECCA 911 supervisor said. Another 17 vehicle wrecks were reported to 911 by 1 p.m. — those did not require EMS.
A vehicle hit a pedestrian on private property Thursday in the western end of Monongalia County.
The Monongalia County Sheriff’s Department was called to the scene at 12:32 p.m., according to Sheriff Perry Palmer.
A helicopter was called to take the patient to the hospital. More details were unavailable in time for this report.
The sheriff’s department also responded to a dump truck carrying coal that wrecked
on Fort Martin Road. That wreck was reported to 911 at 11:30 a.m., according to a
911 supervisor.
The truck rolled over and hit a telephone pole. No one was injured and Fort Martin Road was one lane as of 2:45 p.m. Thursday. Once equipment to clear the coal from the road was in place, the sheriff’s department planned to close the road, Palmer said.
Both accidents are still under investigation, he said.
The other collisions were at Mylan Park Lane and Chaplin Road, Blue Horizon Drive and Number 8 Hollow and on Interstate 79.
Area residents can expect the temperatures to remain low today, said Randy Adkins, Accuweather meteorologist.
“It’s going to be brisk and cold,” he said. “We’ll have highs in the mid- to upper-30s. But once you factor in the wind, it’s going to feel more like the 20s.”
Whatever snow fell overnight Thursday (Adkins said perhaps an inch in Mon County and up to two in Preston) will essentially be it.
Preston County Schools called Thursday afternoon for a two-hour delay for today, with plans to consider closure this morning.
“We’ll likely see snow showers and flurries as well [today], but we’re not at much risk of any more accumulation, Adkins said.”
Saturday, temperatures are expected to remain in the mid-30s, but Adkins said less wind and possible sunshine in the afternoon will make it seem warmer.
“It won’t feel quite as harsh as Friday.”
By Sunday, he anticipates even warmer weather, with highs likely to reach into the low 50s.
