WHEELING, W.Va. — Preston nearly upset the No. 6 Wheeling Park on its own court, taking the Patriots to the wire. Wheeling Park would rally, though, fighting off the upset and defeating PHS, 76-71.
The Knights (7-13) outscored the Patriots in the first half, stringing together a 21-point first quarter and 13-point second quarter to lead WPHS 34-27 at the break.
Wheeling Park punched back in the second half, however, putting up 49 points to PHS’s 37 to edge the Knights.
Alex Vargo led the Patriots in the tight win, putting up 35 points, while D.J. Sanders dropped in 11 and Xavier Morris and Travis Zimmerman added 10 each.
Nick Smith paced the Knights with 23 points while Jaden Fultz added 19.

UHS defeats Hampshire in AAA Championship
PETERSBURG, W.Va. — University (14-1) closed out the Class AAA championship game at Petersburg High on a high note, defeating Hampshire 76-53.
Jude Wiseman-Raven led the Hawks with 18 points while Elijah Jackson (14), Jaden Hammock (11) and Grant Cavalier (10) added another 35 to back him up.
Zach Hill led the Trojans with 16 points, just ahead of Easton Shanholtz with 15.
University returns to action on Monday when the Hawks visit Buckhannon-Upshur.
Middle school basketball
South 7s 53, Westwood 26: Lucas Neer and Waylon Colistra each had 10 points in South Middle’s blowout win over Westwood Saturday evening.
Mountaineer 7s 54 , Suncrest 49 OT: Demarcus Bandy had 23 points to lead the Mounties in the win. Suncrest was lead by Marty Johnson who had 18 points.
Central Preston 8s 54, Bruceton 19: Jared Haskiell scored 16 points to lead Central Preston to its third consecutive Preston County Championship. Cordell Ayers added 14 points for the Wildcats who ended their season at 18-2. Levi Wilson led Bruceton with 6 points.
