Kroger adds wine, beer to curbside pickup

Two Kroger locations in Morgantown — Suncrest Towne Centre and 1851 Earl Core Road in Sabraton — are now allowing customers to add beer and wine to their online orders.

Kroger is offering this service because of a change in state laws that allows for the delivery of beer and wine into vehicles at grocery stores at designated parking spots. In West Virginia, 24 Kroger stores offer pickup service. The Kroger at 350 Patteson Drive does not offer online ordering and pickup.

“We want to simplify life for our shoppers and, for some people, that could mean making one less stop to grab wine or beer,” Allison McGee, corporate affairs manager for Kroger Mid-Atlantic, said in a press release.

People who order beer and wine with their pickup delivery will be asked to present identification upon receiving their order in the parking lot. No minimum purchase is required, and there will be no additional fee to buy beer or wine through Kroger Pickup. Kroger waives the $4.95 pickup charge on a person’s first three orders.

Alcohol will be available through Pickup from 8 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday-Saturday, and from 1 p.m.-9 p.m. on Sundays. Kroger follows all West Virginia laws regarding the sale of alcohol, McGee said.

Because of state law, Kroger’s expanded pickup service does not include tobacco or prescriptions. Gift cards also cannot be sold through Kroger Pickup. More than 40,000 items are available at Kroger online, including fresh meat, sushi and hot food.

Separately, Kroger said it was donating $20,000 to local food banks, including $10,000 each to Mountaineer Food Bank in Gassaway and Facing Hunger Food Bank in Huntington.
