MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — West Virginia quarterback Trey Lowe is in the NCAA transfer portal and will play somewhere else in 2020.
“After graduating from West Virginia this summer, I’ll be transferring to another school as a graduates transfer,” Lowe tweeted Thursday. “This decision wasn’t made lightly, and I’m leaning on my faith as I move forward to this next chapter in my life. I am grateful for this experience at WVU. I truly appreciate all the support I’ve received over the past two years more than you’d know, and to Mountaineer Nation… thank you!!”
Lowe, a former 4-star recruit in 2018 from Tennessee, wasn’t able to break into the quarterback rotation last season following Will Grier’s departure. Austin Kendall won the job out of fall camp, and he was replaced by Jack Allison when injured. Jarret Doege eventually replaced Kendall in the final three and a half games when Doege’s redshirt was preserved.
Lowe was used in situational downs, though minimal. He completed just two passes for two yards and had three rushes for 12 yard in 2019.
Lowe is the second WVU quarterback to transfer this offseason — Allison moved on to West Liberty as a grad transfer. Doege and Kendall are both back, and true freshman Garrett Greene, of Tallahassee, Fla., is another scholarship quarterback.
