WVU student arrested for Sunday shooting

A West Virginia University student was arrested for allegedly firing a gun Sunday night in the area of Fife Avenue and Price Street.

Donte Marshawn Wilkerson, 24, of Charleston, is charged with wanton endangerment involving a firearm.

WVU spokesperson April Kaull said Wilkerson, as a university student, is subject to the student code of conduct.

WVU Police officers responded to a house on Naomi Street because of reports of a large fight with possible shots fired about 11:30 p.m. on Sunday, according to a criminal complaint.

Officers were told there was a fight between members of the Sigma Chi and Phi Sigma Kappa fraternities. One witness said a black man in a gray sweatshirt pulled a pistol and pointed it at him and his friend, the complaint said.

A Sigma Chi member said they and Phi Sigma Kappa members got into a fight on Naomi Street and a black man wearing a gray sweatshirt said he’d be back with a gun.

“Moments later,” he returned and pulled the pistol out, causing the Sigma Chi members to return to their house, the complaint said.

The suspect headed towards the intersection of Fife Avenue and Price Street, where he fired his gun, the complaint said.

Officers watched surveillance footage and saw a man in a sweatshirt come out of a room at the Phi Sigma Kappa house and put a pistol in his waistband, the complaint said. More footage shows the man going back to the Sigma Chi house parking lot and members of Sigma Chi running inside.

Footage showed the suspect raising his arm into the air twice, while walking, according to the complaint. There appeared to be a muzzle flash in the video, and the locations were documented and searched with a metal detector on Wednesday. A 9mm casing was found in that area.

Wilkerson was identified after a victim searched social media and found a picture of Wilkerson with his name. A WVU officer recognized Wilkerson from involvement in previous cases, the complaint said.

Wilkerson was arraigned in Monongalia County Magistrate Court on Friday. He is being held in North Central Regional Jail in lieu of $5,000 bond.

Kaull could not say if Wilkerson is a member of Phi Sigma Kappa, as the fraternity is not associated with the university. The international Phi Sigma Kappa organization did not return a call in time for this report.
