BECKLEY — Kaden Metheny erupted for 37 points at the University High boys’ basketball won the Big Atlantic Classic boys’ tournament with a 101-72 victory of Woodrow Wilson on Saturday night.
“Kaden wanted to make a statement,” coach Joe Schmidle said. “He came out with intensity and focus. It was one of those nights when Metheny and (KJ) McClurg were both in the zone, and their supporting cast played well, too. He had 37 and kept everyone involved. I think we’ve gotten our rotation figured out and we’re getting some quality play from our sophomores in (Aaron) Forbes and (Blake) Barkley. They’re really starting to mature and contribute.”
Trailing by two at the end of the first quarter, the Hawks outscored the Flying Eagles 80-49 the remainder of the game. UHS shot nearly 50% from three (14 of 30) and McClurg added 22 points to the effort. The Hawks also out-rebounded WW 39-25.
UHS (13-3) will play at Wheeling Park at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
