Police chase destroys hydrant; repairs begin Tuesday

A police chase on Saturday night resulted in a vehicle crashing into a fire hydrant at the intersection of Cobun Avenue and South Walnut Street.

A lane of Cobun Avenue at the intersection of South Walnut Street will be closed from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, according to Morgantown Utility Board Spokesperson Chris Dale.

Westover Police initiated a traffic stop on Fayette Street, which resulted in the chase and the crash, according to Morgantown Communications Manager Andrew Stacy. The Morgantown Police Department was notified after the crash and was not involved.

A criminal complaint for the suspect was not available on Monday. Magistrate Sandy Holepit said she dismissed the initial charge because the narrative did not match the criminal code but the paperwork can be resubmitted later.

Westover Police Chief Rick Panico did not wish to comment on the case.

MUB was alerted to the crash at 10:50 p.m. on Saturday, Dale said.

It took a little under an hour for the MUB crew to repair the hydrant, which broke underground, Dale said. In addition to stopping the water flow of 500 gallons a minute, the crew bagged the hydrant to show the hydrant was inoperable.

Repairs will cost about $6,000 and will begin Tuesday. Dale said the repair crew will also replace the hydrant valve.

A street sign was also knocked down at the intersection on Monday but it is not clear if it was damaged in the accident or removed as part of MUB’s repairs.
