MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — The University boys’ basketball team wanted to leave the Beach Ball Classic with positive momentum, and that’s exactly what it did, knocking off Buchtel (Ohio) 84-55 on Tuesday.
“We shot it really well today, which gave us some momentum and confidence,” coach Joe Schmidle said. “Then they had to start pressing us and we just picked them apart.”
The Hawks’ offense was phenomenal — four scored in double-figures, including starters Kaden Metheny (13), Ryan Niceler (13) and K.J. McClurg (19). But off the bench, John Mazza scored 17, 14 of which came in about a six-minute span.
“Mazza gave us a big lift and did some things to spark us,” Schmidle said. “Metheny did a great job of distributing the ball. He had 13 assists and no turnovers.”
The rest of UHS’s starters only combined for five total turnovers. The Hawks also had 24 assists on 32 made field goals.
After finishing its trip to Myrtle Beach with a 2-2 record, UHS (7-2) will face Morgantown at 7:30 p.m. Friday at MHS.
