Dr. Charles Lawrence “Larry” Beall, 75, of Morgantown, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2019, at J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital. He was born in Little Rock, Ark., on Aug. 17, 1944, the son of the late James Elbert and Wilma Geraldine Troy Beall, of Mannington.
Larry grew up in Mannington, where he was a Golden Horseshoe Recipient; a member of the National Honor Society; solo trumpeter in the W.Va. State Band at the World’s Fair in Seattle and a member of Virgil Vingle jazz band. He graduated as valedictorian of Mannington High School. He attended WVU and graduated as AB Biology WVU Board of Governors Scholar and received his MD at WVU School of Medicine. Larry continued his education for his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Washington Hospital Center, of Washington, D.C.; Fellowship in Hematology Oncology WHC, 1st Fellow, Visiting Fellow in Hematology Oncology, National Cancer Institute (Lymphoma and Blood Banking), in Bethesda Md.; Walter Reed Army Medical Center (Pediatric Oncology), in Washington, D.C.; George Washington University (Coagulation), in Washington, D.C.; National Institute of Health, in Bethesda, Md.; and Medical Ethics certification Kennedy Institute of Ethics, Georgetown University, in Washington, D.C. He went on to serve with the 2290th US Army Hospital of Rockville, Md., and retired as Captain. Larry moved to Wheeling and later to Dubuque, Iowa, where he continued private practice in Oncology and Hematology.
He returned to West Virginia and continued his Hematology Oncology practice at Morgantown Internal Medicine Group. He then obtained training in Bone Marrow Transplantation at Johns Hopkins University, in Baltimore, Md. While continuing his private practice in Morgantown, he was also working at the Oncology Clinic at Fairmont General Hospital; as an Associate Professor of Medicine, Blood and Bone Marrow Transplant Unit at J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital; Sr. Investigator Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group; Investigator National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project; Principal Investigator Coalition National Cancer Cooperative Group Inc.; and was a principal investigator for various pharmaceutical groups.
He retired from Mon Health Medical Center after 33 years of service, where, over the years, he served as Chief of Internal Medicine and Chief of Staff. Larry worked with others to establish Hospice services in Monongalia County and served as director of Morgantown Hospice for 20 years. He was extremely proud of his over 40 years in practice as a doctor.
His dedication to his calling as a physician was as important to him as his family. Even though he professionally accomplished much during his lifetime, he is to be noted as an extremely special man who was a wonderful son, brother, father, husband, grandfather and uncle. After retirement, Larry greatly enjoyed gardening, reading, traveling, dinners with friends and especially attending NYC Broadway theater shows.
He is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Elizabeth “Betsy” Ann Davis Beall; daughter, Lauren Beall (Scott) Stupar; son, Brad (Amy) Beall; grandchildren, Jacob Stupar, Emmalyn Beall and Braelyn Beall; sister, Sally Beall (Charlie) Kolb; sister-in-law, Marjorie Davis (Jim) Welsh; brothers-in-law, Chris (Paula) Davis and Woody Davis; along with many other beloved cousins, nephews, nieces, great-nephews and great-nieces.
Larry was a member of St Mary’s Catholic Church in Star City. In accordance with his wishes, cremation services will be provided by Hastings Funeral Home, Omega Crematory.
There will be a Celebration of Life Memorial Service on Sunday, Jan. 26, with details to be announced later.
