Millennium (Ariz.) 65, University 63
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — University went toe-to-toe with the top team in Arizona, and nearly came out with a win in Friday’s installment of the Beach Ball Classic tournament in Myrtle Beach.
Led by two players who are highly scouted by Division I schools, juniors DaRon Holmes (25 points, 10 rebounds, 7 blocks) and Justus Jackson (11 points, 4 assists), Millennium (10-2) held off the Hawks until the final second cleared the clock for the 65-63 win.
But it was UHS (5-1) that took the early lead, as a lockdown performance by Kaden Metheny put the Hawks up 10-2 at the beginning. As the Tigers’ gears began turning, they took a 40-29 lead heading into halftime. They maintained a substantial 10-point lead with 3 minutes on the clock, but the Hawks began chipping away at the deficit. The Hawks had a final chance at the buzzer to put the game away, but Millennium held strong.
What ultimately hurt the Hawks was their performance at the free throw line, hitting 5 of 13 (38%).
“We executed well on both ends of the floor, made good shots and put us in a position where we could have won the game,” UHS coach Joe Schmidle said. “I was happy with the effort we gave tonight for the first time this year. It shows we can compete with the best teams in the country.”
Metheny ended the night with 31 points, three assists and two steals, while K.J. McClurg tossed in 15 points. Mike Maumbe nearly had a double-double with seven points and a team-high 12 rebounds. That’s something coach Joe Schmidle was impressed with after noting his team needed to improve on boards and defense overall at the G-Force Lock and Safe tournament last weekend.
“I thought we played much better on defense. The effort was there, which is all we need,” Schmidle said. “We had the ability. We just have to have the heart. Rebounding is the same thing — we actually out-rebounded them 40-35. Mike did a great job against Holmes, and out-rebounded him 12-10.”
UHS next plays the winner of Myrtle Beach High and Long Island Lutheran (N.Y.) today.
