WVU Medicine Volunteer Services will offer three two-week-long Junior Volunteer Academy summer camp sessions to expose students aged 14-18 to areas of medicine and health professions.
Volunteer Services will accept applications beginning Jan. 1 at wvumedicine.org/volunteers.
Participants in the academy will have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience not offered by traditional volunteering. Participating WVU Medicine departments include Nursing, Rehabilitation Services, Orthopaedics, Surgical Services and Emergency Department.
“This opportunity will allow these students to learn more about careers in health care and provide a better understanding of some of the health care issues in the state,” Nancy Beckner, WVU Medicine Volunteer Services volunteer coordinator, said. “By participating in a hospital setting, they will have the opportunity to receive practical health care experience and gain a deeper understanding of what careers in medicine entail.”
Students interested in participating must demonstrate scholastic ability as evidenced by their high school transcripts and grade point averages, ability to be task-oriented, use of creative and critical thinking skills and by providing two letters of recommendation from teachers or guidance counselors. Potential participants will attend a group interview with a selection committee and must provide immunization records to Employee Health and complete computer-based learning modules if chosen to participate.
