Flash freeze Friday causes accidents across state

KINGWOOD — W.Va. 26 south of Kingwood was closed for an hour Friday morning after a drop in temperatures turned rain to ice on area roads.

“When that temperature got right, it just flash,” froze, Preston Emergency Management/911 Assistant Director Justin Wolfe said. “There were cars everywhere.”

There was a single vehicle rollover on W.Va. 26 north, near the Deep Hollow One Stop. On 26 south of Kingwood, on Oaks Hill, three vehicles were towed from the scene and a fourth pulled out of the ditch.

No serious injuries were reported.

Wolfe and OEM/911 Director Duane Hamilton were driving to a meeting in Elkins when the freeze occurred. They encountered an accident in Barbour County and Wolfe stayed there to help, while Hamilton assisted Barbour County rescue personnel with other accidents.

Both men are paramedics. They ended up missing the meeting in Elkins.
