Preston Schools waiting for SBA approval

KINGWOOD — Preston County Schools will know Dec. 17 whether the State School Building Authority (SBA) will reward its offer to use some levy funds for a roof project.

Preston Superintendent Steve Wotring told the board of education Monday evening that he made a funding presentation to the SBA last week.

He asked the state funding agency to provide $270,000 toward repairing the rest of the roof over the Preston High ninth grade addition and concourse.

He also told the agency the rest of the $451,000 project, about $180,000, will be paid for with local levy funds.

Voters approved a levy earlier this year that includes funds for maintenance and repairs of buildings.

“It was nice to be able to go to the School Building Authority and say, ‘We’re bringing money to the table this time,’ because I have never been able to do that,” Wotring said.

He is hopeful that will encourage the SBA to fund the project.

Also Monday, the board voted 4-0 to give a small piece of land on South Price Street, in front of Kingwood Elementary, to the City of Kingwood. Kingwood Mayor Jean Guillot told the board it was recently discovered the Kingwood Volunteer Fire Department owns the street from its intersection with Brown Avenue on down the hill.

The fire department is giving its section of the street from Brown Avenue to the entrance to the Kingwood Pool to the city. Now that the board is adding its “sliver” of land, the city will be responsible for maintenance on the road.

In other discussions, Wotring said the board’s central office will be closed Thursday and Friday for the Thanksgiving holiday. And in December, because of holidays, the board will meet the second and third Mondays of the month.
