HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — The West Virginia men’s soccer team is heading south to face in-state rival No. 11-seed Marshall in the second round of the NCAA tournament.
The Mountaineers (10-8-2) enter the match after defeating Butler in spectacular fashion 5-1 on Thursday in Indianapolis, Ind. The first round saw 21 WVU shots and 15 shots on goal, greatly outweighing Butler which had six shots and two shots on goal. The Mountaineers also had a 6-3 advantage in corners.
Starters Rodrigo Robles Grajera and Josh DiMatteo each had three shots on goal and two goals in the match, while Andre Muriel Albino added the fifth off the bench.
The Herd (15-2-3) earned a bye in the first round and enters on a five-win streak capped with a 1-0 double-overtime win over Charlotte in the Conference USA championship.
Marshall nets 2.20 goals and takes 12.8 shots per game. Additionally, Marshall has outscored opponents 44-15. The Herd is led by Milo Yosef with 25 points (11 goals, 3 assists) and Jamil Roberts with 22 points (6 goals, 10 assists). Goalkeeper Paulo Pita holds a 0.72 goals against average, allowing 15 goals and saving 64 shots. He has not missed a game this year.
Kickoff is set for Sunday at 2 p.m. at Hoops Family Field. The game will be broadcast on ESPN3.
