Make It Awesome offers popular cookie decorating classes

For many, one of the best bits of the holiday season is all the sweet treats, and of those goodies few things provide as much universal pleasure as a plate of homemade cookies.

The ability to turn those cookies into perfectly decorated edible works of art, however, requires  skill — which is exactly what participants in Make It Awesome’s sold-out Christmas Cookie Decorating Class were there to learn Monday.

Taught by volunteer instructor Danielle Trumble, owner of Danielle Bakes Cakes, the class aimed to teach bakers cookie basics such as flooding (a method done with icing), piping, outlining and writing on cookies.

Michelle Boyers, manager of Make It Awesome, at 18 Commerce Drive in Westover, said Trumble always brings some pre-iced cookies with her, so that the skills can be taught from start to finish, without a lot of wait time to practice the finishing work.

The cookie decorating classes — of which there have been six so far — have proven wildly popular, she said, selling out within an hour.

Registration for the next two classes — set for Dec. 16 and Dec. 18 — will open Wednesday: From 10-11 a.m. for the Dec. 16 course and from 6-7 p.m. for the Dec. 18 offering.

Those interested can register at Make It Awesome’s website, makeitawesomewv.com.

Click on Upcoming Classes, then look for the Christmas Cookie class. Click the photo to confirm and you will be taken to the payment portal. There is a maximum enrollment of 12 people per class. If it is sold out, the option will not appear if you try to register.

Boyers said she’s seen several people attend with family members and with their children (usually around 11-12 years old).

Classes are $30 (plus tax) per person. All supplies are provided and each participant will take home at least 15 cookies (three of each design). The class runs for about two hours.

No refunds will be issued within 10 days of the event.

Besides Christmas cookie decorating, Make It Awesome offers a wide variety of craft classes, as well as open studio space.
