John Wesley Propst, 92, of Westover passed away, Monday, Nov. 18, 2019, at his home. He was born May 28, 1927, in Morgantown, a son of the late Harry Leroy Propst and Clyde Mays Propst.
John was a retired school teacher from Waitman-Barbe and Cheat Lake schools. He was a United States Army veteran, serving in the Korean War. John was a member of the National Education Association, the WV Education Association, the State Retired School Personnel and the American Legion. John was active in Golden Horseshoe and was recognized as a “Knight of the Golden Horseshoe” and one of West Virginia’s best teachers. John was an avid golfer and a master gardener who loved displaying his produce at local fairs. He was a Methodist by faith.
John is survived by one sister, Betty Kelly and husband Robert, of Morgantown, and several nieces and nephews.
John was preceded in death by his wife, Agnes Szarka Propst; brothers, Robert Propst, Charles Elmer Propst, Harry Propst, James Wilbur Propst, Edward Propst, William Propst and Arnold Lee Propst; and sisters, Sarah Ellen Fortney, Mary Reese and Ethel Haas.
Friends may call at the McCulla Funeral Home, 770 Fairmont Road, Westover, from 4 p.m.-7 p.m. Wednesday and from 10 a.m. Thursday until the 11 a.m. funeral service with Pastor Jim Weber officiating. Burial will follow at Beverly Hills Cemetery with graveside military services provided by the Westover VFW Post #9916 and the WVANG military honors.
