First quarter
K-STATE TOUCHDOWN: Dalton Schoen 68-yard pass from Skylar Thompson (13:37), Kansas State leads, 7-0.
West Virginia went three-and-out on its first possession and Kansas State followed that with a bomb down the middle of the field before the Mountaineers’ defense could even get settled in.
Thompson went with play-action on the play, which sucked in the defense and Schoen got behind Keith Washington and then outraced for the final 20 yards to the score.
WVU TOUCHDOWN: George Campbell 19-yard pass from Jarret Doege (11:05), game is tied, 7-7.
The Mountaineers answered right back with a five-play, 75-yard drive that ended when Campbell won his one-on-one matchup against Kansas State’s Jahron McPherson and then hauled in his fifth touchdown of the season.
Campbell also had a 32-yard reception earlier in the drive and Kennedy McKoy had two rushes for 21 yards.
K-STATE FIELD GOAL: Blake Lynch 22-yard kick (4:43), Kansas State leads, 10-7.
West Virginia’s defense came up with a solid stop to force the field-goal attempt. Kansas State had a first-and-goal at the WVU 10, but Jordan Brown was held for no gain and then James Gilbert was held to just a two-yard gain. Thompson then threw incomplete on third down.
WVU TOUCHDOWN: Campbell 15-yard pass from Doege (0:00), West Virginia leads, 14-10.
Doege bought some time in the pocket and then found Campbell again to give the Mountaineers the lead to finish off a long 12-play, 63-yard drive.
For Campbell, the score gave him his sixth touchdown on the season on just 12 receptions.
Second quarter
K-STATE FIELD GOAL: Lynch 33-yard kick (0:43), West Virginia leads, 14-13.
The Wildcats pulled within one behind a 12-play, 54-yard drive that featured seven runs and four passes.
Thompson came up big on two third-down plays, first finding Landry Weber for 15 yards on third-and-three and then running for four yards on third-and-four to keep the drive alive.
Third quarter
K-STATE TOUCHDOWN: Gilbert 3-yard run (7:56), Kansas State leads, 20-14.
Gilbert took an option pitch and went into the end zone untouched to give the Wildcats back the lead and cap off a 13-play, 70-yard drive.
The key play was Thompson connecting with Schoen on a deep curl route for 16 yards on third-and-15 to keep the drive alive.
Fourth quarter
WVU FIELD GOAL: Casey Legg 51-yard kick (14:07), Kansas State leads 20-17.
West Virginia nearly had this drive stall early, but Doege hit Ali Jennings for 13 yards on third-and-six and then found Campbell for 21 yards and second-and-13.
A holding call on WVU lineman Colton McKivitz dropped the Mountaineers back to the K-State 39, but Legg came in and kicked his career long with room to spare.
WVU TOUCHDOWN: Bryce Wheaton 50-yard pass from Doege (11:27), West Virginia leads, 24-20.
Doege again bought time in the pocket by stepping up and rolling slightly to his left.
Kansas State defenders must have thought Doege was going to run, because Wheaton was wide open at the K-State 13-yard line. He simply hauled in the pass and waltzed into the end zone for the game’s final score.
In his first start at WVU, Doege threw for 234 yards and three scores.
