First quarter
TEXAS TECH TOUCHDOWN: Ta’Zhawn Henry 2-yard run (10:58) Texas Tech leads, 7-0.
The Red Raiders opened up with an 11-play scoring drive that saw quarterback Jett Duffey go 3 of 6 passing for 57 yards. His 24-yard completion to Erik Ezukanma set up Henry’s short TD run.
WVU FIELD GOAL: Casey Legg 30-yard kick (7:43), Texas Tech leads, 7-3.
The Mountaineers had to be disappointed with just a field goal here. After a 50-yard completion to George Campbell, WVU had the ball first-and-goal at the Red Raiders 7, but Kennedy McKoy lost six yards on first down and then Austin Kendall threw an incomplete pass and then was held to no yards on a third-down scramble to set up the kick.
TEXAS TECH TOUCHDOWN: Dalton Rigdon 81-pass from Duffey (7:27), Texas Tech leads, 14-3.
The Red Raiders went big on their first play of this possession.
WVU safety Josh Norwood crept too far up to the line of scrimmage on the play-action and Rigdon went right by him for the big play.
TEXAS TECH TOUCHDOWN: Henry 4-yard run (4:52), Texas Tech leads, 21-3.
Following Douglas Coleman’s interception of Kendall, which he returned 30 yards, Texas Tech had a very short field at the WVU 24 and took advantage of it.
Henry’s run came on a fourth-and-1 play. West Virginia was offsides, but the penalty was declined and the rout was on early.
Second quarter
TEXAS TECH TOUCHDOWN: SaRodorick Thompson 1-yard run (13:25), Texas Tech leads 28-3.
This drive was set up by a weird moment that was ruled a fumble by Kendall, who was hit as he was throwing a fourth-down attempt.
WVU players thought the pass was ruled incomplete and began walking off the field. Meanwhile, Eli Howard jumped on the ball to begin the drive.
Texas Tech then marched 87 yards in nine plays, with the highlight coming from R.J. Turner’s 32-yard catch against a WVU secondary that played its worst half of football.
WEST VIRGINIA TOUCHDOWN: McKoy 24-yard pass from Isaiah Esdale (11:16), Texas Tech leads, 28-10.
The Mountaineers went with a double pass. Kendall threw a backwards pass to Esdale, who then threw to a wide open McKoy on the other side of the field for the score.
McKoy also had a 13-yard run on the drive and Kendall also hit Sam James with a 17-yard pass to set up the trick play for the TD.
TEXAS TECH TOUCHDOWN: Thompson 2-yard run (8:01), Texas Tech leads 35-10.
Texas Tech scored its fifth touchdown on its fifth possession of the first half.
Thompson’s run came on a fourth-and-goal in what was another example of West Virginia’s defense not coming up with any answers.
Duffey hit Travis Koontz with a 24-yard pass on the drive and the Mountaineers were also hit with a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.
Fourth quarter
TEXAS TECH FIELD GOAL: Trey Wolff 24-yard kick (10:20), Texas Tech leads 38-10.
The news from this drive came when West Virginiadefensive back Hakeem Bailey slammed KeSean Carter to the ground, which started off a minor melee between the two teams.
Bailey was flagged for unnecessary roughness and unsportsmanlike conduct penalties were also called on each team, which offset.
WVU TOUCHDOWN: Tony Mathis 9-yard pass from Jarret Doege (0:05), Texas Tech leads, 38-17.
Doege came in for Kendall at the end of the third quarter and came up with his first TD pass on the Mountaineers’ final possession.
Mathis, a freshman running back, also made his college debut in the fourth quarter and came up with his first career touchdown.
Sam James, who finished with 14 catches for 223 yards also caught a 22-yard pass from Doege for his final catch of the game.
