KINGWOOD — At least five people applied for a vacancy on the Preston County Board of Education.
The board is looking for someone to fill a spot left by board member Robert “Mac” McCrum, who resigned last month. Voters will elect someone to fulfill the remainder of McCrum’s term in May 2020. That person will be sworn in July 1, 2020.
McCrum resigned to seek the Republican nomination for the State House of Delegates 52nd District seat.
Friday was the final day for people interested in the appointment to contact the board office. As of 2:30 p.m. Friday, five had applied.
The board will meet in special session 5 p.m. Monday to go over the applications in closed session. Board President Jack Keim said each of the five will speak with the board individually for 15-20 minutes.
After all the interviews, the board will discuss the applicants, then come into open session to vote on picking someone.
As part of the application process, those interested in the position were asked to answer these questions in advance:
— In terms of setting vision, goals and policies for the Preston County Board of Education, how do you define the role of the county board and county superintendent?
— What are the three top goals you wish to accomplish as a member of the board, and how will these goals advance Preston County Schools?
— In your opinion, what are the main issues facing Preston County Schools and how do you think the Preston County Board of Education should respond to these issues?
— Given that you will be one of a five-member county board, how can you effectively ensure your leadership attributes will influence county board decision-making given that other ideas will be proposed regarding these issues?
— Why are you the best candidate for this position?
