MANHATTAN, Kan. — The West Virginia women’s soccer team used a pair of second half goals to earn a 3-0 win over Kansas State on Sunday at Busar Family Park.
“I’m proud of the way we came out and fought so hard after playing in a double overtime performance on Thursday,” Coach Nikki Izzo-Brown said. “It was great to see some of our best chances find the back of the net.”
WVU (9-6-4, 4-3-1 Big 12) struck first in the 42nd minute as freshman midfielder Aaliyah Scott sent a great pass into the right side of the box that classmate Gabby Robinson collected just beyond the six-yard line. Robinson fired a shot that landed in the left side of the net to give WVU a 1-0 lead.
The goal marked Robinson’s first career goal at WVU, while Scott earned her second career assist.
WVU led at the break despite trailing K-State (3-12-2, 1-7 Big 12) 8-3 in shots at the half. The two teams recorded a pair of shots on goal each in the first half.
The Mountaineers carried its momentum into the second half as the squad controlled the pace of the match for the first 15 minutes of the second half.
Freshman forward Enzi Broussard extended the lead in the 64th minute after she dribbled to the left and fired a shot from 18-yards out that found the top-left corner of the net.
The goal was Broussard’s third goal of the season and marked the second match in a row that she has found the back of the net.
WVU wasted no time adding another insurance goal as the squad netted its third goal just one minute later. Senior forward Jade Gentile scored her second goal of the season as she sent a volley off a pass from freshman Nicole Payne into the upper-right corner of the net. The assist marked Payne’s second dish of the season.
The Mountaineers earned 11 shots in the second half and outshot K-State 14-13 in the match. The clean sheet marked WVU’s seventh of the season and its second in the past three matches.
