An experiment in WVU’s Engineering Research Building had “unintended consequences” which resulted in a small explosion Monday night.
WVU spokesperson John Bolt said no one was injured in the explosion and the lab sustained minor damage.
Some of the dangerous material is still inside the lab and evacuation of the Engineering Research Building began at 2 p.m. today.
Bolt said the building, which has only labs and no classrooms, is being evacuated out of an abundance of caution so the bomb squad can come and remove the rest of the chemical.
Cars in lot 40 are also being moved.
There is no danger to adjoining buildings, and if the material were to detonate it would be contained to the lab, Bolt said.
Students leaving the building said they received an email telling them to do so.
More details, including the chemicals involved and the nature of the experiment, are not available at this time, Bolt said.
