MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia (10-8, 1-4 Big 12) takes on No. 4 Texas (11-2, 5-0 Big 12) at home today at 1 p.m. after a two-game road series.
The Mountaineers are riding a two-match win streak after defeating Kansas State 3-1 on Oct. 12 and Morehead State 3-1 (25-21, 23-25, 25-23 and 25-11) on Tuesday. Senior outside hitter Katelyn Evans is coming off a 21-kill performance at Morehead State — her fifth of the season. Evans and setter Lacey Zerwas were a devasting pair, with Zerwas logging 42 assists and 14 digs for her sixth double-double of the year. Additionally, Zerwas is No. 4 in the conference with 10.10 assists per set.
The Longhorns come to Morgantown as the second-best team in the Big 12 behind No. 1 Baylor (15-0) who also leads the nation. Texas leads the nation in hitting percentage (.326), and senior OH Micaya White leads the offense with 4.04 kills per set and has five double-doubles this season. Sophomore middle blocker Brionne Butler leads the league with a .595 hitting efficiency.
“Texas is really good,” fifth-year coach Reed Sunahara said. “We have to play well and compete hard, and we’ll see what happens.”
WVU is hitting .209 and averaging 12.7 kills per set behind Kristina Jordan who averages 3.24 kills and 3.91 points per set.
West Virginia has never defeated Texas since joining the Big 12 in 2012 with the Longhorns leading the all-time series 14-0. The Mountaineers have come close to defeating Texas twice, last on Sept. 23, 2017, when they took the then-No. 6
