Man pleads guilty to misdemeanor charge after shooting great-niece in the head

Michael Nichols, who accidentally shot his great-niece in the head while handling a pistol in her home in July 2018, pleaded to a misdemeanor count of being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm on Wednesday.

The state will not make a sentencing recommendation, according to the plea agreement. A sentencing and restitution hearing is scheduled for December.

Nichols is the great-uncle of Chloey Neely, who was shot.

Members of Neely’s family were at the Monongalia County Justice Center on Wednesday, wearing Chloey’s Crew T-shirts, but did not wish to comment.

During a November 2018 hearing, Nichols said Neely was back in school, but there have been no additional updates on her status.

The bullet reportedly went through a wall and struck Neely behind the right ear.

Nichols faces 90 days to a year in jail and/or a fine of $100-$1,000.
