Lucas, Garvin, Askew-Henry, Robinson picked in XFL draft

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — The XFL is set to reboot in February, but first, teams have to fill their rosters, so in a snake-style draft broken up into position groups, several former West Virginia players were chosen Tuesday and Wednesday.

Offensive lineman Marquis Lucas, who started 26 games from 2014-15 for the Mountaineers, was picked in the ninth round by the Tampa Bay Vipers on Tuesday. Lucas went undrafted in the 2016 NFL draft, but spent time with the Buffalo Bills, Minnesota Vikings, Atlanta Falcons and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He also spent time with the Orlando Apollos in the now folded AAF.

Terence Garvin spent his West Virginia career as a safety from 2009-12, moved to linebacker as a pro in the NFL after being undrafted in 2013. He signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers, but also spent time with the Washington Redskins, Seattle Seahawks and San Francisco 49ers. He finished his NFL career with 78 tackles, but now, will play for the XFL’s St. Louis Battlehawks.

On Wednesday, two members of WVU’s secondary in 2018 were picked, beginning with Dravon Askew-Henry to the New York Guardians. He played for the Mountaineers from 2014-18 and started all four years he was able — he suffered a torn ACL prior to the 2016 season.

Kenny Robinson was expected to be one of the best defenders on the WVU defense this season, but he entered the transfer portal after it was reported he broke the WVU Student Code of Conduct. Robinson decided to forgo his remaining two years of eligibility to enter the XFL draft.

Like Garvin, Robinson was picked by the Battlehawks.

Defensive backs Elijah Battle and Jeremy Tyler, offensive lineman Isaiah Hardy and running back Noel Devine remain in the pool for potential selections.
