Theresa Hlad


Theresa Rose Hlad, 103, of Morgantown, died at home on Friday, Oct. 11, 2019, surrounded by family and friends. She was born Jan. 18, 1916, in Gray’s Landing, Pa., the daughter of Antony and Frances Belovec Wallace, immigrants of Slovenia.

She spent her life working for her sister and brother-in-law at Fred Hlad’s Grocery in Cassville. She was a crossing guard for two years at Suncrest Primary School, a custodian at Wiles Hill Elementary School, transferred to Morgantown Junior High and finally became a head custodian at South Middle School, where she retired after 25 years with Monongalia County Schools.

After retirement, she volunteered at South Middle School, working in the office. She enjoyed traveling, baking, polka dances and taking care of her family. She was a dedicated mother, a good friend and a mother to many.

She is survived by one son, Louis J. Hlad, of Morgantown, one sister, Ann Chico, of Morgantown, one special nephew, Joseph Chico III and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Louie Hlad, her sisters, Jennie Boles, Stella Stout, Nellie Hlad and one brother, Tony Wallace.

She also is survived by special friends, Roxy Vasil, Margaret Reider and Elizabeth Conrad.

The family would like to thank Amedisys Hospice for their special care of Theresa Hlad.

This special daughter of the Great Depression was part of America’s Generation, the last of a very special breed.

Friends may call at the Fred L. Jenkins Funeral Home from 5-7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 13. Visitation will conclude with a Scripture Vigil. She will lie in repose at the St. Mary Church from 10 a.m. Monday, until Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. with the Rev. John V. DiBacco, Jr. as celebrant. Entombment will follow at Peace Gardens Mausoleum.
