Bridgeport (Ohio) gets first win of season with second-half comeback, downs Trinity 16-13

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Even with Davon Eldridge stepping up and delivering in the pocket for Trinity Christian, the Bridgeport Bulldogs (Ohio) came back in the third quarter in spectacular fashion to leave Morgantown with their first win of the season, 16-13.

Trinity (2-4) seemed as if it had the Bulldogs (1-6) beaten in the third. Leading 6-0, Calvin Blunt Jr. intercepted a bobbled pass at the Warriors’ 39-yard line and returned it to the house for a pick-6, putting the Warriors up 13-0.

But the Bulldogs weren’t throwing in the towel. After giving up 20-yards on pass interference and horse-collar tackle penalties, they ripped the Trinity-delivered dagger out as Izaac Jozwiak intercepted Eldridge’s pass at the 12-yard line. He returned it for a pick-6 of his own, and a successful 2-point conversion put the Bulldogs within striking range.

After recovering a fumble, Cayden Williams picked up a 30-yard touchdown on the ground. After Trinity was called for roughing the kicker on the PAT, the Bulldogs had another successful 2-point conversion to go up 16-13 in the final minute and a half of the third quarter. The sophomore had a productive night against the Warriors, logging 100 yards on 21 carries.

Eldridge tried to get the momentum back on the Warriors’ side, but after a big-yardage gain down the sideline the freshman was tackled and rolled up. He wasn’t the same after that play, limping on and off the field while attempting to get Trinity moving through the air. His attempt would fall short, unable to find his targets.

“We’re still going to grind, still going to fight,” Trinity coach Marcus Law said. “Our biggest thing is not jumping ahead of what we want to do and staying on our track.”

With Drew Boczek sustaining a hairline fracture earlier in the week, Eldridge accounted for 62 yards on 13 carries and went 3 of 6 in the air for 36 yards and one touchdown.

“That’s what you want from a kid like that – a kid that wants to come in and step up and compete,” Law said. “We needed someone there and he volunteered. He’s going to continue to develop – he’s a competitor. We’re going to go look at film tomorrow (as a team) and he’ll get better.”
