Brooke’s Ryan Bilby shoots three-over-par to lead Round 1 of state golf tournament

WHEELING, W.Va. – Brooke’s Ryan Bilby shot hot to go three-over-par on Day 1 of the Class AAA state golf tournament, leading Washington’s Ethan Hardy by two strokes.

Bilby, one of the first to tee off on Tuesday at 9:30 a.m., is resting at 74. Bilby met par on the first two holes, as well as holes No. 6, 7 and 8, while picking up bogeys on holes No. 3-5 and landing a birdie on hole No. 9 to end the front nine at 38. He essentially repeated that on the back nine, picking up three bogeys, while finding two birdies on holes No. 10 and 14.

Washington’s Ethan Hardy is close behind him, shooting five-over-par at 76. Noah Seiverttson (Wheeling Park, +6), Jacob Perry (Huntington, +8), Berkley Adwell (Greenbrier East, +9) and Jace Ranson (Capital, +9) fill out the top 5.

Morgantown’s top golfer Jack Wiedebusch is nowhere to be seen currently, resting in 18th place with a 16-over-par. Weidebusch had a rough go, picking up three double bogeys on holes No. 2, 5 and 7 while bogeying holes No. 6 and 8. He had two double bogeys and four bogeys on the back nine.

He leads the Mohigans, with Antonio Rollo tied for 23rd with Preston’s Luke Livengood (+19), Patrick Carter (+21) in 27th, and Owen Newbold (+22) tied for 28th.

Additionally, Wheeling Park currently leads the team championship at 32-over-par, followed by Capital and Huntington tied for 2nd at 34-over-par. Morgantown is 6th at 56-over-par behind Greenbrier East and Cabell Midland, respectively.

Round 2 kicks off Wednesday at 9:20 a.m.

NOTEBOOK: Par hard to meet on 12 holes

There were a lot of lanes that tripped up golfers. On the front nine, holes No. 1, 3, 5, 7 and 8 accounted for 88 bogeys and 43 double bogeys, while only 47 pars and 8 birdies were logged. In total, the front nine saw 13 birdies, 121 pars, 137 bogeys and 64 double bogeys.

On the back nine, holes No. 11, 12, 13, 15, 16, 17 and 18 were problematic. The seven holes saw a total of 51 pars, 121 bogeys and 65 double bogeys. In total, the back nine had 1 eagle, 17 birdies, 79 pars, 140 bogeys and 79 double bogeys.
