Decisions made now will
live long after Trump
The reaction by Sen. Shelley Moore-Capito and Rep. David McKinley’s to the impeachment inquiry of President Trump was deeply disappointing.
President Trump and Rudy Giuliani, who is not a representative of the State Department, but Trump’s personal lawyer, have admitted they pressured Ukrainian president Zelensky to dig up dirt on former Vice President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter.
This is verified by the White House’s own transcript. We also know that Trump personally directed that military aid be stopped just before he called Zelensky to ask for this “favor.”
Embolden by the partisan approach of politicians like Capito and McKinley, who make the contradictory claim that we don’t know enough, and that an impeachment investigation is not warranted, Trump is now claiming that the whistleblower’s act was treason.
He has also demanded that the whistleblower’s identity should be revealed — contrary to U.S. law. This demand comes from the man who has sworn to uphold the law and defend the Constitution.
I ask Capito and McKinley to think about the country they want to live in. Do they really want to live in a country where the president is not accountable, can break any law, use U.S. foreign aid as a tool to blackmail other countries to dig up dirt on opponents, and call for whistleblowers to be charged with treason?
The decisions made now will live long after Persident Trump leaves office.
Now is the time to stand up for our democracy.
